How to Choose the Best Ergonomic Chair

Dear Savvy Senior:
My wife is having an increasingly difficult time going up and down the stairs in our house. We are interested in purchasing a stair lift, but aren't sure what to get or where to look. Can you help us?
--Need a Lift
Dear Need:
A good home stair lift is a wonderful solution for seniors with mobility issues who have trouble with steps. A stair lift will carry your wife up and down the stairs in a safe seated position, giving her easy access to the second story or basement level of your home. But with so many options available how do you choose one that best meets your needs and budget. Here are a few shopping tips along with some good companies that offer them.
Types of Lifts There are two basic types of stair lifts that are sold today: straight and curved. The type you need will depend upon the design of your staircase.
A straight stair lift is one that travels in a straight line up a flight of stairs uninterrupted by landings, bends or curves, and costs between $3,000 and $5,000 installed. Curved lifts, however, are much more elaborate and will go around corners, bends and changes in direction. Curved lifts are also much more expensive typically running between $10,000 and $15,000 or more depending on the complexity of the installation.
Also available through certain companies are weatherproof lifts for outdoor steps, and standing stair lifts (also called perch lifts) for those who have trouble bending their knees.
You also need to know that all stair lifts mount to the stair treads, not to the wall, so they are very sturdy and can be installed in almost any home.
If your wife is a large person, you may need to get her a heavy-duty lift with a wider seat and bigger lifting capacity -- all companies offer them. Or, if she's tall, find out about raising the seat height during installation.
Most stair lifts available today also have seats, armrests and footplates that fold up out of the way, and swivel seats that make getting into and out of the chair easier. They also come with standard safety features like seatbelts, breaking systems and footrest sensors, push-button or rocker-switch controls located on the armrest for easy operation, and "call send" controls which allow you to call or send the unit to the other end of the stairs. Make sure the lift you choose has all these features.
Depending on the company, you may also have the option of choosing between an electric (AC) and a battery powered (DC) stair lift. Battery powered units charge at the base station (some recharge anywhere on the track) are quieter, smoother and better than electric lifts, and will work even if there's a power failure in the home.
Where to Shop While there are many companies that make, sell and install stair lifts, the most respected in the industry are Ashley Furniture Store
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover stair lifts, but many states offer Medicaid waivers that will pay for lifts to those that qualify, and the VA offers cash grants to veterans with disabilities for home safety improvements.
To save some money, you may want to consider purchasing a used or refurbished model. Or, if you need a stair lift for only a short period of time, consider renting one. Most companies offer these options, and many offer financing programs too.
To get started, contact some stair lift companies who will put you in touch with a dealer in your area. All dealers provide free in-home assessments and estimates, and can help you choose an appropriate lift.

World Market offers 40% OFF: Tips on Buying Drinking Glasses

Serve family and friends and set your table stylishly with durable drinking glasses. Whether you want plastic drinking glasses kids can easily sip from or elegant crystal glasses to set the tone for a formal party, you're sure to find the right glasses and tumblers with the following suggestions. Read on for tips on buying drinking glasses.

Buying Drinking Glasses:

http://ak1.ostkcdn.com/img/mxc/07312009_grayBarSmall.gif
1.     Choose glasses you can use every day. While you may be tempted to invest in crystal glasses or etched glass tumblers for your home, you'll probably want to buy simple glasses that aren't too formal for daily dinners. Look for tall, clear drink glasses for a classic look that works with many types of dishes or buy plastic drinking glasses for everyday use so you don't worry about damaging your fancy glassware.
2.     Keep the style of your dishes and your kitchen in mind. Before you decide on any drinkware, you'll want to look at the dishes you own and consider the way your kitchen is designed. Colored glass drinkware will complement a vintage kitchen that features vibrantly patterned plates and bright accent walls, while clear water glasses work well with simple white ceramic plates and elegant crockery. If you have a contemporary kitchen, you'll want to buy simple drinkware with clean, straight lines. Tall, cylindrical glasses work well for this type of kitchen and complement both round and square plates.
3.     Find different sizes for different occasions. If you'll be using your glasses primarily for drinking water or soda, you can buy simple tumblers made of clear or subtly colored glass. For serving wine, beer and other cocktails, however, you'll want fancier glassware. Buy delicate stemmed goblets to hold both red and white wines. Look for thick glass mugs or sculpted drink glasses with narrow bases for a traditional look. Martini glasses with narrow stems and wide, conical tops are also nice to have on hand, even if you'll just be sipping virgin daiquiris.
4.     Buy glasses to pull out for special events. Celebrate a birthday, anniversary or even a job promotion by setting out your best glasses. Goblets etched with monograms will make a great impression and can personalize any party. You can also create an elegant atmosphere with crystal tumblers or colored martini glasses with sugared rims.

How to choose appropriate drinkware for cocktails?

World Market offers 40% OFF coupon + FREE Shipping on orders of $150 or more! Offer valid in-store and online between 12/28 - 1/18. Single use codes will be given for both in-store and online purchases. Not valid on alcohol, gift cards or CRAFT by World Market

The most obvious difference is that a highball glass is much larger: 8 to 12 ounces as opposed to 4.5 ounces for a martini glass. Cocktails served traditionally in a larger glass usually include a large quantity of mixers, such as a Tom Collins (served traditionally in a Collins glass, 10-14 oz, though a highball would be appropriate), which only contains about 2oz of gin and is topped off with a large quantity of soda water, or a Cuba Libre (traditionally served in a highball glass), which contains mostly Coca-Cola with a small amount of rum. On the other hand, cocktails served traditionally in smaller stemware, such as the Martini, may contain nothing but the alcoholic ingredients (gin and vermouth). Therefore, they require smaller quantities before one would be inebriated, and thus are served in smaller glasses. Furthermore, stemmed glasses keep your hand further from the (presumably cold) drink, thus keeping it colder longer, important for drinks traditionally served neat (whereas a highball would have room for ice).
If you ask an enthusiast, the shape of the stemware used can be crucial; for example, red wine apparently tastes better after oxidation, so red wine glasses maximize surface area to increase the amount of wine that oxidizes, while white wines do not oxidize well. Champagne needs to stay bubbly, so a champagne flute tries to minimize the amount of bubbles that escape, while some alcohols have a pleasant aroma and thus benefit from wider glasses like a sherry glass that maximize the amount of aroma that escapes.
However, for many average consumers, stemware is stemware is stemware. The differences may or may not be enough to be noticeable to people who are not wine enthusiasts. I would say, if you're looking to stock a kitchen, get a couple types of stemware you find attractive and improvise rather than trying to make every drink in its own special glass.

10 Tips for Collecting and Buying Silverware

Redeem World Market offers 10% 40% OFF on all orders with code! Shop w/ World Market Coupons and get Free Shipping on Orders $150 or More! World Market carries sale items at up to 40% OFF or even more! Redeem this World Market Coupons for details

“How can I tell if my flatware is sterling or silverplated?” This is the most frequently-asked question at SilverCollect. If it doesn’t have the word “sterling”, then it most likely is not sterling silver. The word “sterling” is found on American silver dating after 1860. Early American silver is very rare and was usually marked with only the maker’s name or initials. Silverplate has the maker or company name and often includes terms such as “A1″ or “quadruple plate”. These are various descriptions of the amount of applied silver. Whether you choose to collect sterling or silver plate flatware or holloware, the following tips apply.
Choose a Style, Era or Maker. Reflect upon your lifestyle and personal taste, then make choices that will be a good fit. There are many specialty areas of silver collecting. Some collectors are devoted to a pattern while others collect a particular maker or era. Some only collect a particular type of piece, such as fish servers or tea strainers, and many expand into all areas.
Mix-n-Match. The mixing and matching of patterns has great aesthetic appeal at any dinner or function. This is a wonderful option particularly with hard-to-find, discontinued flatware patterns and is often a must for affordable entertaining.
Wear or Damage. Signs of use do not necessarily detract from value while damage may or may not. Slight damage on a rare flatware or hollow ware piece will not significantly reduce value, if at all. Be wary of buying tarnished silver as it can hide otherwise obvious wear, damage or repair. The price of a tarnished piece should be signficantly lower than retail because the true condition of a tarnished piece is unknown.
Monograms. Many collectors view the old, elaborate monograms as a lost art form and historically important. It does not detract from the desirability or value of a piece. If the pieces you collect are readily available without monograms, they are, in this case, more valuable if they do not or never had one. Monogram removal can damage a piece and is, in most cases, easily detectable.
Authenticity. Some collectors frown upon pieces that have been updated, such as replaced knife blades. Silverplated blades are often found with wear. They can easily be replaced on hollow handle knives and some prefer to have them replaced with stainless steel blades. However, stainless steel was not introduced until the early 1920s. This is one of those areas which is a matter of personal collecting preference.
Repair. Dents, disposal or other damage can be repaired by a silversmith. Pieces can also be replated. The cost is prohibitive for easily-found pieces but is worthwhile and economically feasible for the rare pieces.
Modified Items. Be aware that these exist and learn how to determine if a piece has been modified from its original state. Common flatware pieces are sometimes altered to make them appear to be rare or more valuable pieces. For example, spoons are sometimes cut to resemble ice cream forks. A sugar spoon may have been pierced to resemble a sugar sifter. Avoid purchasing modified pieces for your collection.
Forgeries. New forgeries in popular and rare patterns appear regularly for sale on the internet. In particular, salt spoons and rare pieces such as asparagus servers. Many of these pieces have no maker’s marks. Further, forged maker’s marks in silver have appeared for hundreds of years. The age of a piece does not necessarily indicate it’s authenticity.
Educate Yourself. Many good silver books are available in the collecting section of your local book store or library.
Caring for Silverware. When your silverware needs polishing, be sure to use a soft polishing cloth and a non-abrasive polish. It is preferable to wear cotton gloves to avoid depositing oils from your skin onto the silver. Wash and dry your flatware as soon as possible after use and do not put it in the dishwasher. The best way to care for your silverware is to use it.

World Market 40% OFF Coupons: 5 Tips for Choosing Flatware

World Market offers 40% OFF + FREE Shipping on orders of $150 or more! Offer valid in-store and online between 12/28 - 1/18. Single use codes will be given for both in-store and online purchases. Not valid on alcohol, gift cards or CRAFT by World Market

Choosing items to put in your bridal registry can be challenging, especially when you're picking out things that are supposed to last you a very long time. One of these things is flatware; you'll be using these everyday, so they have to be durable. At the same time, you have to pick out something that goes well with the rest of your new home. These simple steps will help you choose flatware for your bridal registry:

1.?????? DECIDE WHETHER YOU'D PREFER STAINLESS STEEL, NICKEL-PLATED, STERLING SILVER OR PEWTER.

For everyday use, the recommended type would be stainless steel, since it doesn't get stained and isn't toxic, as well as the least expensive. Nickel-plated is not for everyday use since overexposure to nickel can be toxic. Sterling silver is delicate and pretty, but is mainly used for special occasions. Pewter is toxic and is merely for show.

2.?????? LOOK AT THE NICKEL CONTENT.

Flatware is composed of chromium and alloys, nickel being one of the alloys. There is a number that indicates the durability of the flatware, depending on the nickel content. These numbers are 18/0, 18/8 and 18/10. The higher the number at the bottom is, the shinier and more durable it is., which also indicates the nickel content 18/10 tends to be more durable, but may have higher nickel content than the other two kinds.

3. ??CHECK TO SEE IF EACH UTENSIL IS FORMED FROM ONE SINGLE PIECE OF METAL, OR IS MADE OF SMALLER PIECES MOLDED TOGETHER.?

The former is more durable; that is the kind of flatware you want for your bridal registry.

4.?????? STICK TO BASIC DESIGNS.

Pieces of flatware come in simple classic designs, contemporary designs with geometric patterns, or floral designs. For your bridalregistry, choose unfussy designs to allow the utensils to match a wider range of dinnerware.

5.?????? TRY CARRYING THE CASE IT COMES IN.

Good quality flatware tends to be on the heavier side. The weight of your flatware will give you an estimate of its durability.
Once you've done these steps and are satisfied with the style and quality of the flatware you've found, then you can go ahead and include a set for 12 place settings in your bridal registry.

French presses, espresso makers and machines, coffee makers and more. Explore the hottest values to make your morning brew the best it can be.

An elegant new version of the original French press designed by Bodum in the 1950's, our Chambord coffee maker is still the simplest and best way to brew the perfect cup of coffee. Its sophisticated design features a shiny copper-plated steel frame and lid.

ime was when making a coffee involved putting the kettle on and unscrewing a jar of Red Mountain, but the boom in outlets selling freshly ground brews has made us a bit more particular. Sales of coffee machines have been growing with a fifth of homes now owning one, according to Mintel. Whether you're about to join them, or your existing machine needs replacing, here's a guide to your options and how much you can expect to pay.
The choices
There are more ways to make coffee than you might realise, but these are the main options:
Filter coffee machines You pour cold water in the top of the machine where it is warmed by a heating element before dripping down through a basket of coffee into a jug below, which is kept warm by a hot plate. You can use any ground coffee.
Pod or capsule coffee machines The coffee is in a pre-packaged capsule which you put into the machine. When you press a button the pod is pierced and hot water is sent through it and into a waiting mug. These are typically easy to clean, but you tend to be limited to the type of capsule or pod sold by your machine manufacturer.
Percolators Ground coffee is inserted above a water chamber. As the water boils it is forced up a tube and down through the coffee back into the compartment below. You can get stove-top versions or electric versions which contain a heating element.
Pump espresso maker These use a thermostatically controlled boiler which heats the water to its optimum temperature for coffee (between 85C and 92C). When this is reached the water passes through the ground coffee at the correct bar pressure. They usually include a tool for steaming milk so can be used for lattes and cappucinos.
Bean-to-cup This machine will grind the coffee beans and then run hot water through them before dispensing your drink. It is essentially a pump espresso maker with a built-in grinder.
Other considerations
Advertisement
If you are buying a machine without an integrated grinder and you want to use beans, there is one major consideration. As Elizabeth Plummer, senior buyer for Whittard, says: "Making good quality coffee is all about getting the grind right. You should spend more on the grinder than any other piece of equipment. You want to achieve an accurate and consistent grind so that you get the best extraction of liquid."
There are plenty of grinders to choose from, but two that receive good customer reviews are the Dualit 75015 priced at £61.99 with O'Gormans, and theKitchenAid Artisan Burr with Harts of Stur for £149.95.
Crema, the foam on your espresso, is one of the main indicators of a good cup, Plummer says. "Freshly roasted coffee produces the best crema. To achieve this you need to use a high quality blend of coffee and ensure your machine is set to the right water pressure and correct pour time (18-24 seconds)." Here are more details on making the perfect Espresso.

Kitchen appliances are investments, so it's important to shop with caution. You may have your heart set on a massive stainless steel range, but be prepared for an equally massive price tag to go with it. Decide on your budget beforehand and then research which appliance shapes, sizes, styles and setups will work for your kitchen. These Houzz kitchen appliance guides will help you sort it all out.
This classic oven-cooktop combination suits most kitchens in both style and function. Determine your budget, available space and style ahead of time to help you decide between a standard slide-in freestanding range, a stainless steel commercial-style range, a vintage cast iron range and more
Ovens

If you've opted out of the standard range arrangement, you'll need to find a separate oven and cooktop for your kitchen. This can be a great thing for wannabe chefs, since it opens up a world of possibilities: Double ovens, wall ovens, warming drawers and steam ovens can all potentially find a spot in your kitchen.

Having a separate cooktop allows for more flexibility in design and cooking. If you love wall ovens or just want to keep your baking and cooking space separate, you'll want to find an individual electric or gas range.

Inspired by unique designs from around the globe, our dinnerware collections are a welcome guest at any occasion.

1. Get the right size dishes for your cupboards, shelves, and dishwasher.
You may love the look of those big, beautiful plates, but you won't love them so much when you can't close your cabinet doors! Consider your space and storage restrictions before buying anything.

Just make sure you get dinner plates that fit in normal cabinets (assuming you have them). I love our Pottery Barn dishes, and they're super durable, but the dinner plates are exactly 12" diameter. Most upper cabinets seem to be 12 inches deep, but that's from the front to the wall, not the inside of the cabinet space. Probably more of a hassle than necessary. - LikelyLaura
I had to return a set of Martha Stewart dishes because the dinner plates were too tall to fit in my standard dishwasher - the fan would smack the top of the plate! I found this out on the maiden run when I unpacked the new dishes and placed them in the washer. They ended up being repacked and returned that same day! I try to buy Made in America or Made in England for dishes as I'm afraid of the stories of lead and other chemicals in items from China. -Wendy A
A lot of today's plates are just HUGE! For those watching portion sizes, a smaller plate really helps. I also looked for plates with a rim (as opposed to a coupe shape), or a large plate with a smaller food area. [Also consider a] reasonable dishwasher footprint - when the mugs from our set need to be replaced, I'll be looking for something narrower. The mug area of our dishwasher fills up days before the rest of it is full. Same applies to cupboard space. - craftybeaver

I really like all white with little to no embellishment, but have a hard time finding things that aren't too big! We have a mini set from Williams-Sonoma and a lovely larger set from Crate and Barrel. - esausville
2. Look for open stock so you can customize to your needs.
You don't need to buy a 5-piece set if you know that you're mostly interested in dinner plates and soup bowls. Open stock options let you pick and choose exactly what you want, and even better, easily replace a piece if it gets broken.

We bought open-stock white from Crate & Barrel. I love it! It is basic and works with everything. Over time, I have added different serving pieces—also in white—from all sorts of brands and spots. It has created a unified table, and the white shows off the vintage when I mix and match. Also, at $6 a plate, when one chips it is no big deal. We own 20, due to lots of parties at our house, so buying a new plate is easy. -Shabbydiva
I look for... open stock so I can customize the number of bowls/side plates/dinner plates and ignore the cups and saucers; stackable on a shelf and in a dishwasher; and an attractive design that will look good even if covered with spaghetti sauce. -fabricwench

3. White is classic, and bone china or porcelain will never let you down.
You can never go wrong with white dishes. They're beautiful, classic, and versatile. They make a great base set, and you can always accent with colorful bowls or mugs.

Just white. It's simple, and I do think food looks more elegant and appetizing on a white background. I know not all shades of white are equal, but it's much easier to buy more pieces that aren't part of your set. - gloriana232

Kitchen lighting can aid quality food preparation. Professional kitchens are filled with lighting, but a home kitchen also needs ambience. There are 3 kinds of kitchen lighting: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, it is a great idea to include all 3 for maximum cooking efficiency and home comfort. This article will tell you how to choose the proper lighting for a kitchen.

Identify the work areas in your kitchen. Task lighting are direct beams of light that illuminate a designated work area. These could include prep stations for making coffee or using the cutting board, sinks, desks or tables.

Select the areas that are directly above your work stations.
Image titled Choose the Proper Lighting for a Kitchen

Install lighting fixtures above those areas. Some people use halogen bulbs, as they produce a light glow, but they aren't too harsh. Others use fluorescent bulbs in all fixtures because they are energy efficient.
A popular choice for task lighting is under cabinet lights. These can be installed when you get new cabinets, or they can be screwed into place later. If you like this idea and you are getting new cabinetry, make sure it leaves enough room at the bottom to shed light on your work area.
Another choice is pendant lights that hang from the ceiling. Many beautiful modern fixtures hang from a single chord to shed light on an area. You can adjust this lighting to the right height over the sink or stove.
Image titled Choose the Proper Lighting for a Kitchen
A third option is to recess lights into the ceiling, directly above work stations. They give broad, even lighting to your work. This is best done with a home or kitchen remodel because the electrician must wire them extensively into the walls.

2. Improve the View
It’s tempting to skip window treatments in the bedroom. But even a few panels of curtains can transform the mood of a room. Try a gauzy white curtain for a secluded window, or a set of blackout panels if you’re a sensitive sleeper.
3. Give Yourself Some Space
If you have a couch or dresser at the foot of your bed, try reversing the flow. Pull your bed out from the wall, place a divider behind it, and create your sitting or dressing space there. You’ll be amazed at how much more spacious and tranquil your bedroom will feel once those busy areas are out of sight.
4. Find a New Hue
A quick coat of paint can refresh and finish a dull, white room. Try a dark tone, such as teal, for a bedroom that revives in the morning and soothes at night.
5. Show Your Art Appreciation
Liven up tired walls by hanging a piece of precious art. Check thrift stores, flea markets, and attics for one-of-a-kind finds.

6. Pick a Palette That Soothes
Jumbles of bright colors are stimulating. But in the bedroom, that can translate as irritating. For a soothing setting, choose muted colors, and stick to a limited palette.
7. When in Doubt, Subtract

Layering is fine in the living room. But a bedroom is for rest and relaxation. Instead of adding items to your bedroom décor, try subtracting for a clean, fresh feel.
