Kitchen lighting can aid quality food preparation. Professional kitchens are filled with lighting, but a home kitchen also needs ambience. There are 3 kinds of kitchen lighting: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, it is a great idea to include all 3 for maximum cooking efficiency and home comfort. This article will tell you how to choose the proper lighting for a kitchen.

Identify the work areas in your kitchen. Task lighting are direct beams of light that illuminate a designated work area. These could include prep stations for making coffee or using the cutting board, sinks, desks or tables.

Install lighting fixtures above those areas. Some people use halogen bulbs, as they produce a light glow, but they aren't too harsh. Others use fluorescent bulbs in all fixtures because they are energy efficient.

A popular choice for task lighting is under cabinet lights. These can be installed when you get new cabinets, or they can be screwed into place later. If you like this idea and you are getting new cabinetry, make sure it leaves enough room at the bottom to shed light on your work area.

Another choice is pendant lights that hang from the ceiling. Many beautiful modern fixtures hang from a single chord to shed light on an area. You can adjust this lighting to the right height over the sink or stove.

Tip #1 – Buy high quality mirrors. Check these three factors when looking for a high quality mirror: glass quality, mirror thickness, and mirror silvering. In glass quality, see if the glass used in the mirror has no inconsistencies in its makeup and does not distort a reflection. The glass should have a flat surface. Mirrors for the home are available in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 thickness. It is recommended to have a mirror with 1/4 thickness since it will not misshapen a reflection, even if the wall where it is positioned is not flat. Mirror silvering is the coating, usually silver nitrate and other chemical compounds, in one side of the glass. Quality mirrors have a high quality, thick coating of silvering.

Tip #2 – Get accurate measurements. Before you go to the home decor store or to your local mirror retailer, make sure you have with you the correct measurements of the mirror. Go to the space where you will place the mirror and get the measurements. Measure twice to ensure you have the right dimensions. It prevents you the hassle of returning a mirror which doesn’t fit the space.

Tip #3 – Allocate a budget. There are expensive mirrors and there are cheap ones. Think about how much money you could spend on a mirror. Remember that you get what you paid for. It’s better to save enough to buy a high quality mirror than get an inexpensive one which distorts a reflection, and easily breaks. You wouldn’t want to replace your mirror regularly because of poor quality.

Tip #4 – Don’t be in a hurry when shopping. Take your time browsing through the numerous mirrors on display at the store. You are purchasing an essential item for your home or office and it’s good to spend some time in shopping. Do not rush to get any mirror in the store and then realize you have the wrong mirror when you come home.

Tip #5 – For a custom made mirror, hire a reliable mirror company. There are many mirror manufacturers out there and you have to do your research on which of them can be trusted with your customized dream mirror. You can ask suggestions from family, friends, or colleagues.
